Will “Real Player Motion” Actually Change How We Play FIFA 18 Or Is It Just Marketing Hype?

FIFA 18 is set to feature a new animation engine, signature player animations, and most importantly, the size and skill of the player will affect how they actually move with their feet. If let’s say Smalling needs to cover 100 meters, he’ll end up taking more steps than Messi, but Messi will be able to take many smaller and better touches, giving him more control.

This could lead to quite a bit more realism in the game, or it could lead to an era of close control being dominant in the meta game. We’ll see how it pans out, but if they’re doing signature animations for key players, it could create a lot of issues for the less popular ones in Ultimate Team.

Will Ronaldo’s cards have “the best” and “most efficient” animations since he was mo capped for example? You’d like to think that won’t be the case and that the game will balance it out, but then again Ronaldo is “overpowered” in real life with the amount of goals he scores anyway. As you’ll hear in our FUT FM episode, all of this is very tricky!

How Will The New FIFA 18 Crossing Controls Affect Matches?

Crossing inputs have been changed to include the use of shoulder buttons as modifiers, and crossing physics have been altered as well.

While FIFA 17 made traditional crossing horribly inefficient (that driven cross cutback though!), you wouldn’t want it to be too easy in FIFA 18 of course.

And lord save us all if pure cross spam becomes a viable play style once more.

There’s A New Type Of Tackle In FIFA 18

FIFA 18 has a tackle that’s somewhere between a standing tackle and a sliding tackle, and it’s currently mapped to the triangle/Y button.

We discuss whether or not this could be the biggest change to the defensive side of the franchise since jockeying became so powerful. And is having more defensive options good or bad in terms of decision making on defense? There’s a fine balance to strike between manual defending and auto defending, especially in FIFA Ultimate Team.

FIFA 18 Is Set To Introduce A Hive Mind AI System

In recent interviews, the developers have confirmed that AI players in FIFA 18 will make decisions based on what the rest of the team is doing.

In theory, this could completely change how we attack and defend in the game, and sneakily suggests that the AI in previous games was to blame for a lot of issues popping up randomly. Perhaps this will result in a more realistic matches of football, but of course, Ultimate Team has never been about realism, so we’ll see.
